Introduction
Penelope Davis emploie la technique du photogramme sur papier couleur. Pour visualiser sa méthode de travail complexe, il faut s'imaginer la transformation du matériau de départ qu’est le « livre ». L’artiste explique : « les images finales ne sont pas de simples photographies, mais le résultat visuel d’un processus – une chaîne de transformations et de renversements, dont l’achèvement compose un objet, très lointain de son origine. »

TRANSFORMATIONS
Au commencement, il y eut le livre… Penelope Davis, née en 1963, collectionne de vieux volumes, les place dans des moules en silicone puis les remplit d’une sorte de résine. Ainsi, une fois la résine séchée, le livre recréé reprend vie sous forme d’objet de verre. La photographe traite chaque « livre de verre » avec des gels colorés et ajoute des filtres de couleurs supplémentaires en chambre noire. Penelope Davis expose ensuite les livres sur du papier couleur grâce à la technique du photogramme. Ses images intenses, atmosphériques et mystérieuses sont ainsi créées sans utiliser d’appareil photo. L’artiste explique son travail ainsi : « les images finales ne sont pas de simples photographies mais le témoignage d’un procédé – une chaîne de transformations et d’inversions qui crée la trace d’un objet dénaturé, différent de sa forme initiale. »
