Réalisé par Alex Katz, le portrait de Laura Halzack, danseuse étoile de la Paul Taylor Dance Company de New York, séduit par son élégance toute en tension autant que par l’interaction des couleurs, de la surface et de la forme. Fait inhabituel chez Katz : la réduction délibérée aux tons noir et blanc, semblable à une photo voire à un gros plan de cinéma. Associé au regard de la danseuse qui occupe le centre de l’image, ce moyen d’expression investit l’œuvre d’une aura exceptionnelle, d’une présence encore bien vivante. L’œuvre met en scène un moment de suspension, un instant détaché du mouvement habité d’une profonde introspection. La danseuse s’abstrait ici de son environnement, attirant tous les regards vers elle. Quant à l’arrière-plan sombre, il confère au portrait sa résonnance abstraite. Les fins traits de son visage, sa fière posture, son regard porté au loin, la consacrent comme à la fois comme icône et simple être humain.

À propos de l’artiste

Le photographe américain Alex Katz (né en 1927) est surtout connu pour sa peinture figurative. Ses œuvres représentent notre monde tridimensionnel à travers des portraits et des paysages aplatis, simplifiés. Alex Katz est né à Brooklyn. Il a fréquenté la Cooper Union School of Art de New York, avant d’étudier l’art à la Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture of Art de Skowhegan, dans le Maine. À rebours de l’expressionnisme abstrait alors en plein essor aux États-Unis, Alex Katz peignait dans les années 1950 des œuvres représentatives. Mais ses coups de pinceau, rapides et expressifs, reflètent l’influence d’artistes comme Jackson Pollock ou Willem de Kooning. À la fin de la décennie et au début de la suivante, son œuvre est marquée par des formes simplifiées, par une l’étude précise de la lumière, des couleurs et formes. Sa fidélité au figuratif ainsi que son attention portée aux surfaces planes anticipent certaines des caractéristiques du pop art naissant.

Alet Katz a également réalisé des collages, des gravures et même des décors de théâtre. Au cours des années 1970, il se concentre de plus en plus sur ces médiums et commence à élaborer des sculptures. Il se lancera plus tard dans la création de paysages grand format, tels qu’on peut en voir à travers Environments , lesquels convoquent le spectateur et le plongent dans l’œuvre. Il travaille d’ailleurs encore aujourd’hui avec des thématiques abordant la nature. Alex Katz a exposé en solo à l’Irish Museum of Modern Art de Dublin ; au Musée juif, au Brooklyn Museum et au Whitney Museum de New York ; ainsi qu’au Centre d’art contemporain de Malaga, en Espagne. L’artiste a reçu de nombreuses distinctions pour son travail. Lauréat de la bourse Guggenheim, il a également été reçu à l’American Academy of Arts and Letters. Il vit et travaille entre New York et le Maine.

Curriculum vitæ

Alex Katz was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1927. After earning a degree at the Cooper Union School of Art, he went on to advanced studies at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. In addition to prominent exhibitions across the USA and Europe, his work has earned him numerous awards and accolades, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, a St. Gaudens Medal in Art, a Cooper Union Professional Achievement Citation, and a Fellowship at the American Academy in Berlin.
