Abstractions verticales

Les villes sont des lignes, des trames, des motifs en mouvement, des images abstraites et expressives d’immeubles, de rues, de métro où se déplacent des hommes. Depuis le XIXe siècle, la ville a séduit nombre de photographes. Horst Hamman a trouvé un moyen d'expression artistique particulièrement original pour traduire la densité des constructions s'élevant dans la ville. Le photographe allemand a su se plier à l'impératif de l'architecture en utilisant son appareil panoramique de manière verticale - le résultat lui valu un succès international. Hamann, né en 1958 à Mannheim dans le Bade-Wurtemberg, a photographié dans plus de soixante-dix pays. Il fit un premier voyage à New York en 1979 et depuis la fascination pour cette ville ne l'a jamais quitté. Il mit cinq ans à réaliser l’ouvrage « New York vertical » sorti en 1996  et pour lequel il reçut nombre de prix dans le monde entier, parmi lesquels on peut citer le Prix Kodak du meilleur ouvrage de photographique et le Photo Design Gold Award. Le Muséum of the City of New York lui rendit hommage en lui consacrant une exposition. En 2005, Horst Hamann publie un ouvrage grand format regroupant  toutes ses photographies parisiennes « Paris Vertical ». Hamann vit avec sa femme et ses deux enfants à New York et dans le Maine. « D'autres photographes ont certainement exploré le cadrage panoramique vertical à New York. Jamais pourtant cette esthétique si particulière n’avait si bien trouvé sa justification. C'est comme si on réalisait enfin que tout s’élance vers le ciel: l'évidence était pour la première fois visible ».
